Miss Jenny and I do Aiken

Last Saturday, while One Way and I visited Columbia, Miss Jenny and I took an excursion to Aiken, horse capitol of South Carolina (with Camden nipping at its title). To me, it was home. So nice to see that other people walk around in jodphurs and half chaps while grabbing lunch – and so nice to see that no one looked at them sideways!

Our first stop was a tack store, since Miss Jenny has figured out that the only way to get me to shop is to make it horse related (very sneaky! But I'm on to you!). Haven't seen one of those in nearly six months so I picked up some needed provisions.

We tried to get some deals at a nearby thrift store, but it came up short.

After that, we went to a wonderful little restaurant and I ordered the best rueben I've had in quite some time! Very delicious.

While at an antique store (also, somewhat horse related since I'm not known for my antiquing prowess), we discovered a polo match playing just outside of town, and we promptly drove over to watch.

It was my and Miss Jenny's first polo match, and we learned quite a bit. But by far, Miss Jenny's favorite part of the afternoon out was embodying Julia Roberts' character in "Pretty Woman:"

One Way plays Harbortown

Dad got One Way a round at Harbortown this past weekend, and I seriously think I'll never hear the end of it. It was like setting a Twilight fan loose on the actor that play Edward.

He did really well and shot an 86. There were two or three holes where some mistakes were made, and then he could have shot in the low 80s or high 70s, but he was gracious about it and moved on.

It was his first time on a PGA course and he loved the challenge (despite the initial shock over the small greens).

More pics can be viewed here.

Cora, the foster kitty

Remember the demons?

Well, we still have one left who remains un-adopted. We have named her Cora, for Core Sound, a nearby body of water, and she may get adopted here soon. So I thought I would make a post about her, especially since I got cute pictures of her yesterday.

When Cora came to us from the Coast Guard base, she was the most frightened kittens. Not sure if you have ever dealt with frightened feral kitties, but they turn into tasmanian devils. No lie. So not only was she the most frightened, she was the most frightening.

But like her sisters, she came around with time and lots of kitten burritos (where you wrap up a cat like a burrito and force your love upon them so they realize that you aren't going to hurt them and you can steer clear of those claws haha).

She is the runt of the litter, probably why she was the most skittish. She seems to be a one-on-one type kitty. She first bonded with Ana (story), and then she bonded with me. Most of the time her uber-curious nature trumps her scaredy-cat nature, but she can still be unsure about a lot of things.

We hope she finds her forever home soon.

When hens crow ...

It's a bit like "When pigs fly." They don't. And we have a "hen" that has begun to crow, which means we have a rooster!

Considering roosters are loud and unnecessary for a home flock, I urged One Way to make a certain bird Sunday dinner, but he said we'll just trade the rooster out for a hen with the resident chicken man down the street.

However, at this point, we aren't sure which one is the rooster ... I suspect it's Rose (Roy) the Rhode Island Red. But I'm waiting for confirmation of seeing the crow first hand before jumping to conclusions.

Kittens settle in

Our feral demon kitties have adjusted to domesticated life with relative ease. They are getting fat, fat, fat and love their snuggles.

One of them, the black kitty, has adopted Ana as her friend. And poor Ana, who is accustomed to getting beaten up by Missy, is not sure what to do or think. So she placates the kitten by allowing only minimal snuggling, a few licks, and then gingerly moves away (as if at any point and time the kitten will decide to eat her).

It's fun to see their individual personalities come alive. We have not named the formerly feral kitties, and I'm not sure we're going to. We are foster parents, after all, and I suspect their names will change once they find their forever home(s) anyway. We don't need to name them and get anymore attached.

We got demons in the house

But they're pretty darn cute. One Way rescued a mama kitty and her three out of five kittens. Mama is getting spayed at the time of this post, and we only have three kittens with two at large.

These cats make tigers look tame. They are pretty darn feral. But, we aim to tame 'em and then send them on their way to a new home to shred.
